With winter coming faster than Santa falling through the chimney, W. Carey wants their customers to be safe when driving on the wintery roads. We recommend that drivers adhere to a basic car maintenance checklist before taking their vehicle out onto the road, especially if you are driving home for Christmas.
These essential checks must be done routinely to ensure that the car does not suffer any breakdowns or potentially lead to any accidents. The Owner’s Manual offers drivers specific guidelines on these checks and will inform you when the car service is due. Alternatively, you can always book your car for a service at the garage for an interim servicing.
Basic Maintenance Checklist
Checking your fluids (including fuel) before you start a long journey is vital, as you don’t want to leave it until the last minute when you need to top them up at the last moment. Make sure the screenwash system is fully functional – this is the law! It must be kept topped up regularly with good screenwash, preferably one that prevents freezing and clear away greasy grime. Before winter arrives, the antifreeze should be checked and topped up (See Water for more information).
Checking the condition of all the exterior lights on the vehicle is a law requirement for any vehicle in order to prevent accidents. By giving them a good clean and making sure that all the bulbs are working and to guarantee there are no cracks in the light casings.
This should be checked every two weeks by using the dipstick. This is a simple check, which is highlighted in the cars Owner’s Manual. This should be done before long journeys so as to ensure you don’t have any problems or suffer any breakdowns on the motorway!
This should fundamentally be checked every week. This should be done when the car is off and the engine is cold. Check the coolant level is between the MIN and MAX marks, as lack of coolant can cause the engine to overheat and can cause serious damage.
These can be a bit difficult to check yourself, so you can always take your car to your local garage to check the battery level. This is one of the most common causes of breakdowns on the roads, at any time of the year.
An essential check to be done every two weeks, the pressures in your tyres should be checked. Low pressure can result in an increase in tyre wear and reduced control of the car when driving. It is also important to check for any cuts or wear and to check the tread is within the legal limit.
